Costa Rica: Best Place to Spend Christmas and New Year's Day
CNN asked travel agencies to rank their best destinations for the end of the year. Three travel agencies ranked Costa Rica the best place to spend Christmas and New Year's.
These were SmarterTravel, StudentUniverse and the Student Travel Agency (STA).
Costa Rica was selected for the top spot, followed by Lima, Peru; Panama City, Florida; Boston; London and Paris.
Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) marketing director Maria Amalia said she is thrilled at the announcement, but not surprised. "This proves that our efforts to showcase the Costa Rican experience to travel agents have already yielded important benefits for the country," she said.
Early December marks the beginning of the dry season and the end of the green or "wet" season. As such the vegetation is still lush and green, but the weather is normally just about perfect. There is a great many activities for the whole family from seeing volcanoes, soaking in hot springs, bird or animal watching to just relaxing on the beach. You can choose to fly on a zip line, go snorkeling or white water rafting.
The holidays are also a great time to participate in the Christmas celebration in Costa Rica. Enjoy some of the native holiday food such as tamales and participate in one of the many various celebrations throughout the country. Enjoy the festival of lights. Get tickets to one of the many shows at the National Theatre, a cultural treasure. See the San Jose Tope, or horse show, where riders from across the country come to show off their best animals and costumes. Experience the largest of the Costa Rican bullfights which takes place in Zapote where bulls are never harmed or killed.
