Costa Rica Fishing Report
New Pacific Blue Marlin IGFA World's Record

Enrico Capozzi, who we suspect holds the world record for the most world records, added still another Feb. 3, fishing aboard his boat Spirit of Pilar out of Guanamar in Carrillo, on the northern Pacific coast.

Capozzi landed the new Pacific blue marlin International Game Fish Association world record on a fly, for a new 12-pound tippet record following a one-hour-and-20-minute battle with the 104.5-pounder, displacing a 44.5-pounder.

Carrillo is jumping

Joe Riley from Maryland reports he and his gang just returned home from a great three-week trip, fishing with Richard Chellemi on the Gamefisher II out of Carrillo, halfway down the Nicoya Peninsula on the northern Pacific coast.

He said the count, best he can remember, was two blue marlin caught and released out of four up, three striped marlin released for five up, 140 sailfish releases out of at least 200 seen, 28 dorado, including a 35-pounder, and three yellowfin tuna.

The entire Pacific coast
appears to have shifted into high gear, with Capt. Mark Corn of Southern Costa Rica Sportfishing reporting that Dave Lag and two friends from Boston in three days raised 29 sails and released 17, along with two blue marlin estimated at 350 and 200 pounds. They also caught four dorado to 37 pounds and some small yellowfin tuna for sushi on the boat.

Current Fishing Reports from Rio Colorado Lodge
The weather has been beautiful, clear skies, a little warm during the day when there is no breeze.
This week totals are as of Sunday evening, 86 tarpon jumped and 28 to the boat!! Six snook were caught in one afternoon by Roy Haskell and Ray Duff of Arizona. They also jumped 6 tarpon and boated two.
Sara and Ron Hendrickson of Fairbault, Minnesota, boated one tarpon of the 4 they jumped.
Neal Orser of Pennsylvania and Greg Evans of New Jersey jumped 15 tarpon and boated one in just one day!
Carolyn and Ed Milner of Baton Rouge, Louisiana jumped 8 tarpon and boated 2 in two days.
Richard Moldenhauer of E. Aurora, New York jumped 11 tarpon and boated four in 2 days on fly and conventional tackle.
Michael Buck and Thorston Kramm visited us from Germany. In three days they jumped 25 tarpon and boated 9, they were fishing both conventional and fly.
Bob and Patricia Tarver, along with Jennifer Reap have jumped 17 tarpon and boated 6.
All of the action has beein in the river mouth just inside the breakers and outside on the rip line.

Lake Arenal guide Ron Saunders reports that fishing on the lake is improving with a drop in water level. Late last week, in one day, he nailed 13 guapote (rainbow bass) and pinto bass, all up to a kilo in weight. He said they had some massive strikes and knockdowns around protruding tree trunks and in the coves. Winds have been mild, days mostly sunny.

WBS Member Sets Sailfish Record

Costa Rica continues to stand out as one of the world's top fishing destinations. Fishing with Spirit of Pilar owner Enrico Capozzi, WBS angler Stacey Parkinson recently set not one but two records for Pacific sailfish on the flyrod. Using an eight-pound tippet, Parkinson bested an 88.5-pound sailfish off Golfito to set the line-class record in that class. A few days later, she set another mark for six-pound class tippet, landing a 91.5-pound sailfish on the lighter tackle. This fish demolished the old record set off Guatemala by over 41 pounds!

The bull dolphin or Mai-Mai,(Dorado in Costa Rica) , is a big game schooling fish. Trolling, casting and even jigging near some bait schooling near the surface will hook you into success and a heck of a good time. A screaming "spooler" will be accompanied by high wild leaps, and nearly landed you'll capture, an additional hookup from nearby dolphins too!
