Ideas For Fly and drive
Even though we do recommend that you use our transportation with an English speaking naturalist guides we will arrange a rental car if you want more adventure but we do suggest that you don’t drive st night. Costa Rica’s roads are safer, more scenic and quieter than those of its neighbors and having four wheel drives opens up un-touristy towns and villages. You can drive to Caño Blanco to catch a boat to Tortuguero National Park (to which there is no road access) to see caiman, iguanas, river turtles and more than 320 species of birds including toucans and parrots. Next come cacao-growing areas and a stunning drive up to the Monteverde cloud forest, to see more flora and fauna and perhaps take a ride on a zip line. A journey north on the Pan-American Highway may conclude at the Rincón de La Vieja National Park, set around an active volcano, and surrounded by lush cattle-raising cowboy country. Parque Nacional Tortuguero is a protected wilderness area on Costa Rica’s northern Caribbean coast. Its beaches are famous nesting grounds for sea turtles, including endangered green turtles. The park’s freshwater creeks and lagoons, which can be navigated by boat or canoe, shelter caimans and river turtles. The surrounding dense rainforest is also rich with wildlife, from monkeys to many bird species. One of Costa Rica’s most popular ecotourism destinations, the canals, rivers, beaches and lagoons of Tortuguero National Park are a study of Rainforest, freshwater and marine biology. The park and small town of Tortuguero are accessible by boat or small aircraft. When people think of Rainforest, the first thing that automatically comes to their minds is Tortuguero. It’s not only sloths who get to chill in Costa Rica. While many beaches are framed by jungles and wild-looking landscapes, they can still be used for the usual beach stuff: sunbathing, swimming, sport fishing, surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving. The Nicoya Peninsula is physically separate from most of the country and its balmy blue waters are a fixture on the American surf itinerary. Dirt roads are motorbike-friendly and it’s easy to move between hip Malpais and Santa Teresa and arty Manzanillo. Hotels run the gamut from ultra-exclusive boutique pads and full-service resorts to surf shacks and house lets. Nicoya Peninsula
The Nicoya Peninsula is on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. It comprises northern Guanacaste Province and southern Puntarenas Province. The area’s surf beaches include Playa Santa Teresa and Playa Mal País in the south, and Playa Grande, in Las Baulas National Marine Park, in the north. Leatherback turtles nest and hatch at Playa Grande. Olive ridley turtles arrive farther south at Ostional National Wildlife Refuge. Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve
Monteverde is a town in mountainous northwestern Costa Rica. It’s renowned for its biodiverse forests in the clouds. The famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve shelters countless wildlife species, including jaguars, ocelots and the colorfully plumed resplendent quetzal. The reserve’s marked trails cut through ferns and orchids, and way overhead, suspended bridges allow walks above the forest canopy. As Central America’s most adventure-focused destination, Costa Rica has become a favorite with younger generations. Tempisque River – Palo Verde Wildlife Observation Tour:
The Tempisque Palo Verde River Wildlife Boat Tour will take you to the entrance of the Palo Verde National Park. The best bird watching for aquatic species is found right here, as the park is favored by many migratory birds as they escape the cold winters in North and South America. This is a highly accessible national park, and you can follow a paved road to the wheelchair accessible visitor’s center near the top. The visitor center has information about the history of the volcano and current information about the geomorphic processes that shaped the ecological attraction. Other amenities include a cafe, restroom facilities, and a very informative museum.
Walking just 15 minutes from the visitor’s center, the main crater offers a spectacular view. At almost a mile (1.6 km) in diameter, the crater’s rain-fed sulfuric pool still bubbles and emits smoke into the air. The last major eruption was in 1917 and that was the first one since 1910. visitors can still see geysers explode into the air up to 820 ft (250 m) high. Chances of getting wet are pretty remote as the crater descends almost 1,000 ft (300 m) and is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world.
Standing on the rim, visitors often smell the sulfur in the air, which at times has proven to be acidic enough for the park to close. It is from this crater that the effects of acid rain can be seen on the vegetation surrounding the landscape. Around the huge main-crater is the beautifully blue-green colored Botos Lake (Laguna Botos) and on the opposite side, the von Frantzius cone.
